Smith College Guild of Change Ringers

Practice: Monday and Thursday 18:30-20:30

Smith College is lucky to be one of a very few colleges and universities in North America to have bells for change ringing. The local band includes students, faculty/staff, and local ringers alike. We aren’t a church tower so we don’t ring for Sunday service; instead, we occasionally mark college events, including student-only ringing early in the morning on Mountain Day!

Attempts at longer pieces of ringing (mostly quarter peals) happen monthly; we aim to provide as many “firsts” as possible for those who want to achieve something new. Once a semester or so, we arrange a weekend visit to Boston or Kent, which gives an opportunity to meet other ringers, practice on more bells, and spend time socializing. Most importantly, we prioritize being a welcoming and kind group, making sure everyone involved is having a good time and getting to ring the things they enjoy most.

There is also a strong local handbell band, so those interested in ringing in hand – or in more rapidly learning methods beyond what we ring in tower – will be well supported.

The tower mascot is a 3-D printed slug named Sally, and we also love weasels (14235)!
