RW 2912 10/02/1967 p97 NORTHERN UNIVERSITIES’ MEETING THE meeting for the Spring Term of the Northern Universities was held on January 28th at Derby, Nottingham University being the hosts. Ringing began on the fine ten at Duffield, where contingents from the nearer Universities appeared in force. Following Duffield, the assembled company invaded Derby, beginning the day’s ringing in earnest at St. Alkmund’s Owing to time table alterations, the lunch break consisted of an hour and a half. Any tower grabbers with both enterprise and/or transport were promptly lured on to ring for a wedding at Beeston, Nottingham University’s home tower. Comparing numbers at Beeston with those seen earlier in the day, we assume that a goodly proportion were content to grab a pub instead ! Fortified with some form of midday repast, all met at St. Luke’s to tackle the heavy eight. This was followed by ringing at St. Peter’s (a very nice eight), nestling in the heart of Derby. Those who chose to leave St. Luke’s early and arrive at St. Andrew’s late enjoyed a good ring here. At St. Andrew’s the capacity crowd of St. Luke’s materialised again, and the ten were put through their paces, though some experienced difficulty owing to the height of the ropes. Ringing concluded at the end of a busy day at Derby Cathedral. While a touch of Spliced Surprise. Major floundered, a touch of Double Norwich provided some of the best striking of the day. Another notable event was an invitation to Manchester University, who had come armed with a strong contingent to parade their own Royal band. They declined—they said—being unable to decide on which version of London !!! The usual impromptu “ business meeting ” was held at the Cathedral. Here the suggestion, mooted at the previous meeting, to form an Association on an organised basis was reviewed and dropped. The Northern Universities will continue in its own sweet, but unofficial, way!- It was also decided that the venue of the Summer Term meeting would be Liverpool on June 17th A vote of thanks is due to all local ringers who met us and. of course, to all visiting Societies for making the day a successful one.
