RW 2563 03/06/1960 P387 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY GUILD NOT UN-CO-OPERATIVE Dear Sir.—One can obtain an impression from recent correspondence in “The Ringing World.” particularly from the impertinent comment in the report of the London University Guild annual meeting, that the Manchester University Guild has purposely been an aloof and unco-operative member of the Universities Association. This impression is most certainly not a true one. We have never refused to help other Universities in our own area, and any member of other Guilds, including London University, are always welcome in Manchester. The purpose of the letter from our secretary was to correct a false claim regarding a ‘bigfour’ group amongst the University Guilds, and to stress that with as many Guilds north of Birmingham as south of it, the viewpoint of certain southerners who consider the northerners as remote outsiders is now quite unjustified. We have invited the Universities Association to hold a dinner in Manchester, and I believe that if it takes place it will be the first annual dinner held north of Birmingham. We shall certainly do all we can to help if in future members of southern Universities wish to come ‘up North’ more frequently than in the past.—Yours faithfully, DEREK OGDEN, President. The Manchester University Guild.
